How To: Install the ESH044 Sensor Hub

Installing the ESH044 Sensor Hub

Prerequisites:

CTid

The Sensor Hub and all related CTid enabled sensors are compatible with EG4xxx and newer and will not work correctly with EG3xxx or earlier model eGauge meters.

  • Necessary hardware:
    • EG4xxx or newer eGauge meter
    • Supported powered sensors or eGauge compatible CTs
  • Only input +5Vdc to the power terminal (if not using USB) when using powered sensors (RJ-11 connections). Other voltages will cause damage.
  • If extending CTs, do not install the Sensor Hub inside a distribution or breaker panel, only the CTs should be inside.

Instructions:

Installing the Sensor Hub for use with powered CTid sensors:

Example: assembled sensor hub kit powered from eGauge USB port

Step 1: Connect sensors to the appropriate ports on the Sensor Hub. Powered Sensors should connect to the RJ11 port, AC CTs should be connected to the green 2-pin port.

connect powered sensors to the RJ11 ports
connect AC CTs to 2-pin ports when extending

Step 2: For each port used, move the selection switch to the left for a powered sensor or RJ11 connected DC CT or to the right for a standard 2-pin CT. Only one side of each port can be used at a time.

selection switches should be set to the port used (powered/unpowered)

Step 3: When using powered sensors, the Sensor hub must be supplied with 5 Vdc. This can be supplied by either the included Mini-USB cable OR via the 2-pin 5 Vdc input. Do not use both inputs and do not supply more than 5 Vdc or damage to sensors may occur.

Step 4: If the distance between the eGauge and the Sensor hub is 1 foot or less, connect the included breakout cable to the RJ45 port of the sensor hub and connect the 2-pin plugs for each used port to available sensor ports on the eGauge.

The breakout cable wiring is color coded to match the Sensor Hub port coloring to easily identify where each connected sensor plugs into the eGauge.

If the Sensor Hub is located farther away from the eGauge, a CAT5 cable wired to T568B may be added between the breakout cable and the Sensor Hub using the included Ethernet coupler.

Step 5: If using CTid sensors to read external signals such as the Pulse Sensor (EPS) or the 4-20 mA Sensor (EC420) refer to the sensor's product page for specific wiring information.

Step 6: Finally, configure the sensors that were connected. Please see this article for information regarding configuration of CTid enabled sensors.

Troubleshooting and Tips

  • Issue: CTid is not detecting my sensor
    • Solution: Check that the selector switch for the port is in the correct position.
    • Solution: Check that the correct port is being scanned. Refer to the diagram in this article for breakout cable coloring for port identification.
  • Issue: The light on the Sensor Hub is not lighting
    • Solution: Check that 5 Vdc is being applied to the Sensor Hub.
  • Issue: The LED on my CTid sensor is constantly lit.
    • Solution: Has more than 5 V been applied to the sensor? Damage may have occurred.
