Part 4: Connect to your eGauge

Commercial Install?

Managed networks at commercial and municipal locations often have more strict network security. You may need to follow up with the local network administrator and provide them with the eGauge Network Connections documentation to ensure outbound connectivity to the eGauge server will not be blocked by existing network security.

LAN

Ethernet connectivity is available on all current eGauge models. Follow the steps below to connect to an existing LAN:

Step 1: Connect Ethernet from the local router to the eGauge LAN port.

Step 2: Confirm LAN connectivity by checking that the LEDs on the eGauge LAN port are active.

Step 3: Confirm connectivity to eGauge.io by looking at the LCD screen. The Ethernet icon should be present and blinking.

Information

If remote access is not needed, the meter interface can be accessed from within the LAN by typing the local IP address or the meter device name into a web browser. The IP address can be seen on the LCD Info Menu. Alternately, the eGauge device name can be typed into the address bar of a web browser, eg https://egauge99999/

For information regarding remote access via eGauge.io please click on the tab above.

Troubleshooting

  • If the Ethernet icon is present but not blinking, the eGauge has a connection at the LAN level but cannot reach the Internet to connect to the eGauge server. Follow up with the network administrator and provide them with the eGauge Network Connections document.
  • If you see a symbol where the Ethernet icon should be, the meter is not able to obtain a connection from the LAN. Follow up with the network administrator.

WiFi

Important!

eGauge WiFi connectivity is not compatible with captive portal networks where a login screen must be accessed in order to connect.

Wifi connectivity is available on EG4215 and EG4230 model eGuage meters. You will need a WiFi enabled laptop or mobile device to complete this process. Follow the steps below to connect to an existing WiFi network:

Step 1: Be sure the included WiFi antenna is securely screwed into place on the eGauge antenna connector.

Step 2: Press the LCD Toggle Switch to display the Main Menu. This switch can be pressed to make a selection or moved to the side to move the on-screen cursor.

Step 3: Move the switch to highlight Settings and press to select.

Step 4: Move the switch to highlight Wireless and press to enter the wireless settings menu.

Step 5: Move the switch to highlight Setup via AP and press to activate the eGauge Access Point.

The AP will remain active for 60 minutes (3600 seconds). If you wait longer than this time frame to connect, you'll need to repeat the previous steps to reactivate the AP.

Step 6: Use your laptop or mobile device Wifi connection to connect to the AP displayed on the eGauge LCD screen.

Step 7: After you connect to the eGauge Wifi AP, your browser should launch automatically showing the device login screen. Enter the owner account login credentials found on the label affixed to the side of your meter, and click Sign in.

Additional step for Samsung mobile devices!

Additional steps may be needed for Samsung mobile devices. Please see: EG42xx Connectivity for Samsung

Step 8: After logging in you will have the opportunity to connect the meter to an available Wifi network. Click to choose your preferred network and enter the Wifi network credentials and click Save to connect.

Quick Tip!

If you don't plan to connect the eGauge to a Wifi network at this time and would like to continue with configuring the meter, click on the Main menu button in the upper Left of the screen and choose Setup → Other Settings, then continue with the configuration process.

Step 9: Click OK to connect to the local Wifi network, or click Cancel to go back and choose another network. When the eGauge connects to the local Wifi network, the AP function will end and you will lose connectivity to the meter. Check the eGauge LCD screen for progress.

You should now be able to connect to the device via its eGauge proxy URL (see the eGauge.io tab above for details) or at its local IP address on the LAN and continue with the configuration process.

eGauge.io

If your eGauge meter is connected to a LAN with Internet access and is able to reach the eGauge.io service, it can be accessed remotely from any computer by visiting its unique device URL:

https://EGAUGE-DEVICE-NAME.egauge.io

To find your meter's unique URL, substitute the eGauge device name printed on your meter's label for 'EGAUGE-DEVICE-NAME' in the example above, or if your meter has been online for at least one hour, enter your meter's full device name into our online Find my Device tool.

Note:

Older meters may connect using: https://EGAUGE-DEVICE-NAME.egaug.es

If your link results in a device not found error, your eGauge is not able to reach the eGauge.io service. Follow the steps in our connectivity troubleshooting guide or follow up with your installer or network administrator.

Direct Connect

EG4215 or EG4230?

The eGauge WiFi Access Point function can be used to connect to an EG4215 or EG4230 meter using a WiFi enabled laptop or tablet. For more information, refer to the WiFi tab above.

Follow the steps below to directly connect to an eGauge via Ethernet using a Windows computer:

Step 1: Make sure the eGauge is powered on and connect a standard Ethernet cable from your PC to the eGauge LAN port. Do not use a crossover cable. Reboot the eGauge to force it to fall back to its default IP address of: 192.168.1.88

Step2: Open the Control Panel on your computer and click on Network and Internet.

Step 3: Click on Network and Sharing Center.

Step 4: At the Left, choose Change Adapter Settings.

Step 5: Locate the Ethernet adapter you're using on your computer and right-click it. Choose Properties from the menu.

Step 6: In the list of items, locate: Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4). Click on it and then click the Properties button below the list.

Step 7: If there are already values in the Use the following IP address fields, make note of them so you can put them back when you're done. Set the fields as shown, and click OK:

Step 8: Click Close to close Ethernet Properties.

Step 9: Open a web browser and enter the default IP address of the eGauge in the address bar: 192.168.1.88
