How much data does the eGauge use?

Answer

The amount of data or bandwidth the eGauge uses depends on several factors:

When Accessing the Interface:

  • Viewing the eGauge interface online uses 200–250 KB for the initial graph page load.
  • Additional data (10 KB to several hundred KB) is used depending on the time range and data being displayed.
  • Real-time updates transfer 0.5 KB to 10 KB per second.
  • Each open browser viewing the interface adds this amount of usage.

When Pushing Data to Third-Party Services:

  • Data usage depends on the number of data registers, the push frequency, and whether compression is enabled.
  • Without compression, monthly usage can range from a few MB to over 1 GB.
  • Using data compression (available in firmware v2.03 and later) can significantly reduce this usage.

Reducing Data Usage:

  • Local access (using the device’s local network) minimizes external bandwidth use compared to internet access.
  • Data compression for pushes can reduce usage further.

Connection Suitability:

  • Any high-speed internet connection (DSL, satellite, or cable) is usually sufficient.
  • On limited data connections (e.g., cellular), prolonged use or leaving the interface open may result in high data consumption, potential overages, or service interruptions.

Each eGauge device’s data usage varies, and it’s influenced by how it is accessed, the configuration, and the frequency of data pushes. For precise tracking, tools like browser developer consoles or the eGauge XML API can help estimate usage.
